Narrowcasting with Google Chromecast

This is a question we often get and we can answer this with ‘yes’, although other solutions are probably more stable, but more on that later. Freecasting is a cloud based narrowcasting solution and your boards will run in a browser, so also in Google Chrome. Google Chrome has a cast function built-in. We will show you in a few easy steps how you can set this up.

What do you need to start using a Chromecast for Narrowcasting?

  • A Chromecast, Chromecast Ultra, or TV with Chromecast built-in.
  • Connect your Android and Chromecast devices to the same Wi-Fi network

How can I cast from my computer?

  • Open Chrome browser
  • At the top right, click More → Cast
  • Choose your Chromecast device where you want to watch the content

How can I cast from my Android device?

  • On your Android device, open the Settings app
  • Tap Connected devices → Cast → Select your Chromecast device.
  • Your Android screen will now show on your Chromecast device. You can now see tabs on Chrome on your Chromecast.

Unfortunately, this feature is not available on iPhones or iPads

When testing this solution we have found a few challenges which will be summarized below. Feel free to connect with us, so we can add more to this.

Narrowcasting Chromecast FAQ

  • Google has a great help section for this
  • When setting this up, do not use a wifi network that is being used by the rest of the company, since everyone will be able to start tweaking it
  • Chromecast doesn’t support multiple screens. So if you would like to connect to multiple screens, Chromecast is not ideal. Unless, you want to set up several networks with different computers
  • Use an extension like auto refresh to be sure that your system is not going to sleep
